Why do battles get harder on the story map?

Each chapter is always more difficult than the previous one. The farther you get, the more challenging the battles become:


You cannot reset the difficulty, but you can fight every battle you have already fought multiple times, staying in the currently unlocked chapters for as long as you need.
Unlocking more advanced items in the Nordvig Merchant requires you to get to certain chapters of the currently available story.
