	Jayavarman VII	Indradevi

	Jayavarman VII rose to power following the Cham invasion of 1177, which devastated Angkor and killed its king. After defeating Cham forces in 1181, he was crowned king and began an extensive programme of reconstruction. He established Angkor Thom as the new capital and commissioned major monuments including the Bayon, Ta Prohm and Preah Khan, as well as a network of 102 hospitals across the Khmer Empire.	Indradevi, chief queen of Jayavarman VII, was appointed principal teacher of three monastic colleges — Nagendratunga, Tilakottara and Narendrasrama — where Buddhism and the sciences were taught to women and men alike. Her Great Stele of Phimeanakas, a Sanskrit elegy for her late sister and predecessor Jayarajadevi, records that her learning surpassed that of the philosophers and stands as the earliest known poem by a Khmer woman.
