How do I level up heroes' special abilities?

There are a few ways to effectively increase the special abilities of heroes. The general requirement for upgrading is that the matching barracks of the various hero classes have been built and upgraded to at least level 2.
Leonidas, for example, is an infantry hero who can be trained in the infantry barracks. Simply open the barracks and select a hero with the + button.

You can also manage the ability training of a hero via the ability tab in the hero overview.

Mastery Points are required  to  improve hero  abilities. You obtain them over time by training heroes in the barracks, or speed up the process by using an exclusive Mastery Point reward from Treasure Hunts.

Do I need to upgrade those abilities?

As enemies become stronger, it is certainly advisable to upgrade heroes' abilities to your advantage in in a battle.

Upgrading abilities not only increases their power, but can also improve their effects, such as increasing the duration for timed effects or even adding additional effects.

When building your team and deciding on which heroes' abilty to upgrade next, keep in mind that each hero has a unique special ability to offer. Even heroes of the same class and type can bring different strengths to your team. Look for synergies between abilities to create powerful combinations to quench your foes. For instance, one hero’s crowd control ability might work perfectly with another’s damage-over-time effect, or a healer's support can keep your front-line fighters in the fray longer.
