What can I do with the buttons on the left side of the screen?

On the left side of the screen you can find all items of the main menu. These grant access to the most important menus in Warlords of Aternum.

Here is a brief explanation of what you are going to find from top to bottom:

Battle Log: A log with all recent events on the map (invasions and battles not part of liberating shires).
Leaderboard: These show live player rankings. Climb the ladder and compete with best Warlords in the world!
Forge: Here you can upgrade items equipped by your regiments.
Army: An overview of your unlocked and locked regiments, their status and amount of Shards.
Upgrade: From here you can apply Upgrades to increase your regiments' attributes. Get your troops ready for battle!
Map: Use this to go back to the main map view at any time when not in battle.
