Leader of the joshitai (women's army) during the Battle of Aizu in the Boshin War. One of the last samurai conflicts in Japanese history. She fought on the front line against modernised Imperial forces, was fatally wounded leading a charge, and asked her sister to behead her so her head would not be taken as a trophy. A deeply moving figure of loyalty and sacrifice whose story is celebrated annually in Aizu.
